OpenSignal compares 5G experiences across ten major carriers

5G, Rocket House, Pew-Pew! Does it make sense? No. Does it channel the usual breathless 5G marketing materials? Yes.

Telecomm analytics firm OpenSignal released a report last week analyzing the connection experience of 5G users across the world, on ten different providers. Unfortunately—and typically for 5G—the source data is so muddled that it’s difficult to draw meaningful conclusions from the results.

In the USA, Verizon is the only carrier to have deployed a significant millimeter-wave (5G FR2, various bands from 24GHz to 40GHz) network—and in fact, at the moment Verizon is only deploying 5G FR2, which is why its average 5G download speed bar leaps off the chart, at 506Mbps. 5G is a protocol, not a wavelength—and the extreme high speeds and low latencies carriers and OEM vendors promote so heavily come with the high-frequency, short-wavelength FR2 spectrum, not with the protocol itself. read more

Telia Company launches Ericsson-powered commercial 5G in Sweden

Swedish communications service provider Telia Company has launched commercial 5G in Stockholm powered by Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) Radio Access Network (RAN) products and solutions.

Initial services on the 700Mhz band will cover most of central Stockholm by mid-June, including the Norrmalm, Östermalm and Vasastan districts.

Telia aims to enhance and supplement its low-band 5G commercial services with additional nationwide 5G coverage, including mid- and high-bands, following the auction of the related spectrum by the Swedish government later this year. For this launch Telia is using its existing 700MHz spectrum, boosted by LTE and New Radio (NR) carrier aggregation. read more

Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone Germany Embrace 5G DSS

The race to blanket Germany with 5G is officially underway. Within the span of two weeks, market leader Deutsche Telekom Germany and now Vodafone Germany have activated 5G services in limited areas across the country.

Vodafone Germany’s initial 5G service is now live in 20 German cities, following Deutsche Telekom’s initial 5G launch in six cities earlier this month. Vodafone Germany’s 5G service is live in Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Dortmund, and Munich, among other municipalities. read more

Early 5G drones face slow upload speeds and frequent 4G handovers

As 5G networks become more widespread and robust across the world, flying drones will eventually rely on cellular infrastructure for both remote controls and live 4K/8K video streaming from the skies. But early 5G drones and networks might not yet be ready for prime time, a group of Austrian researchers suggest, as their inability to maintain consistent 5G connections limits their data transfer rates — an issue that currently impacts the ability to share live video from the field.

Rakuten’s 5G network will be built with containers

Rakuten this week commercially launched its new greenfield 4G network in Japan. But the operator is already working on transitioning its network to 5G. And it plans to use containers, rather than virtual machines, for its network functions virtualization (NFV) infrastructure as well as part of its radio access network (RAN). Some of the vendors it’s collaborating with for containers include Robin.io, Altiostar and Intel.

It’s working with the Silicon Valley startup Robin.io — a five-year-old company with about 60 employees — to build its NFV container-based infrastructure.

For its 4G network, Rakuten operates one horizontal cloud layer above its macro cell sites, edge data centers and central data centers. That cloud runs on Red Hat’s OpenStack (virtual machine) platform with contributions from Cisco. read more
